I’ve been thinking about getting my nose pierced since I was 19 but have never had the guts to just go do it. So finally after getting married losing my appendix and having a baby I figured, what’s a nose ring? Can’t hurt too bad! Right?

I had a nose piercing about a month ago, 2 wks after i developed a red sore next to it. I did the sea-salt water soakings twice a day, and wa-la! Rudolof! Any suggestions on what to do and why did this happen?

Nose piercing is a custom which was prevalent in the Middle East and then taken to India by the Mughals in the 16th century. You and your piercer will decide on which jewelry is appropriate for your lifestyle (and the initial jewelry used for the piercing may not be what you have in mind) and which jewelry will best accommodate your face for the inevitable subsequent swelling. The piercer may choose the best location for your new jewelry by asking you to flare your nostrils. The best looking nose jewelry is located in the crease that become apparent during flaring and in this location you minimize your chances of accidentally ripping out your new piercing!

As it has already been mentioned above nostril piercing was widespread in India and the piercing of the left nostril was believed to make childbirth easier. Clean your nose piercing and the accompanying jewelry twice a day to remove any dried blood. Use warm salt water and a cotton ball. Apply Betadine or any other antiseptic with a cotton ball or pad. Stay away from hydrogen peroxide; it has abrasive qualities. If you have skin allergies, check what would be best to use with your doctor. Before getting a nose piercing, I advise you to check with your doctor. Rinse the area with clean running water and gently move the stud or ring around.
